TikTok Restricts Late-Night LIVE Streaming for Nigerian Users Amid Surge in Explicit Content

TikTok has temporarily limited access to its LIVE streaming feature for users in Nigeria during late-night hours following a rise in adult and policy-violating content on the platform.

The restriction took effect at midnight on Sunday when eligible creators received an in-app notification informing them that LIVE access would be unavailable between 11pm and 5am as part of a “safety investigation.” Many creators confirmed that attempts to go LIVE during the restricted period displayed a “No Access” notice.

The measure also blocked Nigerian users from viewing LIVE broadcasts hosted in other countries during the affected hours.

Only creators with at least 1,000 followers—the minimum requirement for LIVE—received the alert. However, several confirmed that the restriction was active across the country. By Monday morning, access had been fully restored, triggering widespread conversations online.

TikTok clarified that creators who earn through virtual gifting were not affected financially, as their balances and previous earnings remained intact.

Late-night periods are known to be peak streaming hours in Nigeria, with creators hosting entertainment shows, games, trends, and interactive sessions that pull massive engagement and virtual gifts.

The temporary restriction follows TikTok’s recent safety report which revealed that, in the second quarter of 2025, more than 49,000 LIVE sessions in Nigeria were banned for violating community rules, alongside millions of regular videos removed for guideline breaches.

The platform has not stated whether the late-night restriction will become a long-term safety measure.
