“Portable Beaten in Police Cell?” — Ogun Police Probe Viral Video Showing Zazu Crooner Crying in Handcuffs

The Ogun State Police Command has launched an internal investigation following the circulation of a disturbing viral video showing Nigerian musician Portable, also known as the Zazu crooner, allegedly being assaulted while in police custody.

Viral Video Sparks Outrage

The video, which has gained massive traction on social media—especially X—shows Portable handcuffed, shirtless, and visibly distressed, pleading tearfully while seated on a couch in what appears to be a police holding area in Ogun State.

The footage has triggered widespread condemnation online, with many Nigerians raising concerns about police brutality, human rights abuses, and the treatment of suspects in custody.

Police Confirm Arrest, Condemn Alleged Assault

Reacting to the controversy, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, confirmed to Vanguard that Portable is indeed in police custody but strongly condemned the alleged assault captured in the video.

“Yes, he was arrested and he is with us, but that is a different issue. What is important is the assault that was happening at the station. We don’t condone it,” DSP Babaseyi said.

He further emphasized that recording or publicly displaying suspects is against police procedures, regardless of the individual involved.

“We don’t condone videoing suspects. We don’t even put suspects’ faces out. No matter who the suspect is, nobody should be treated in such a manner,” he added.

Internal Investigation Underway

DSP Babaseyi confirmed that the Command has commenced a full investigation into the incident, assuring the public that any officer found culpable will face disciplinary and legal consequences.

“The investigation is ongoing, and the officers involved, if found culpable, will be sent to the appropriate authorities. That process has already started,” he stated.

Why Portable Was Arrested

Portable’s arrest reportedly followed allegations of assault, threats, and intimidation made by actress and skit maker Ashabi Simple (real name Omobolarinde Akinyanju), one of his baby mamas.

The alleged incident occurred on January 1, 2026, at Portable’s bar in Ogun State after Ashabi visited him following an invitation.

According to reports, the dispute began when Ashabi demanded to be recognised as a wife, while Portable insisted that only his legally married wife, Bewaji, holds that status.

The argument allegedly escalated into violence, with Ashabi accusing Portable of:

  • Slapping and beating her
  • Confiscating phones
  • Threatening her and her siblings with an axe

Portable Fires Back

In response, Portable released a lengthy Instagram video denying the allegations and accusing Ashabi of infidelity, expressing anger over the lawsuit filed against him.

Public Attention Intensifies

As investigations continue, public attention remains firmly fixed on both the alleged police brutality and the domestic violence accusations surrounding the controversial singer.

The Ogun State Police have urged the public to remain calm and allow due process to take its course.
