El-Rufai Released From ICPC Custody To Attend Mother’s Burial Amid Ongoing Trial

Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai has been released from the custody of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission to attend the burial of his late mother.

The anti corruption agency granted him temporary release on compassionate grounds following the death of his mother, Hajiya Umma El-Rufai, who passed away in Cairo, Egypt, after a period of illness.

El-Rufai was seen arriving at his Abuja residence after regaining freedom. His son, Bashir El-Rufai, confirmed the development in a post shared on X, expressing gratitude over his father’s release.

The former governor had been in ICPC custody since February 18 over allegations related to financial misconduct and abuse of office.

Earlier in the week, he was arraigned before the Federal High Court in Kaduna alongside another defendant, Joel Adoga, on multiple charges including alleged money laundering, fraud, and unlawful possession of public funds.

According to the ICPC, the charges include claims that El-Rufai received payments far above the legally approved severance allowance during his time in office.

The commission alleged that the former governor collected sums amounting to over N289 million on two occasions, which it said exceeded the approved entitlement.

The case remains ongoing, with legal proceedings expected to continue after the burial rites.
