Tension has gripped Plateau State following a deadly attack by suspected gunmen in Jos North Local Government Area, leaving multiple residents feared dead and several others injured.
The attack occurred on Sunday evening, March 29, 2026, in the Angwan Rukuba area, particularly around Gari Ya Waye, where armed men reportedly stormed the community and opened fire on residents.
Eyewitness accounts said the attackers, some believed to have arrived on motorcycles, began shooting indiscriminately at a busy junction in the area, triggering panic as people fled for safety.
The affected location, which includes student populated areas near Plateau Private School and Eto Baba, was thrown into chaos during the incident, with reports of casualties including youths, children, and other residents.
While official figures are yet to be confirmed, local sources and witnesses said several bodies were recovered, with many others injured and taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.
In response, the Plateau State Government imposed a 48 hour curfew on Jos North Local Government Area, effective from midnight on March 29 to April 1, in a bid to restore order and prevent further violence.
Governor Caleb Mutfwang condemned the attack, describing it as unprovoked and unacceptable, while assuring residents that security agencies have been deployed to track down those responsible.
Despite the deployment, some residents expressed concern over the response time of security operatives, claiming that help arrived after the attackers had left the scene.
The incident has sparked widespread reactions across social media, with many Nigerians expressing grief and calling for urgent action to address recurring violence in the state.
The attack, which occurred on Palm Sunday, has further intensified discussions around insecurity in Plateau State and the need for stronger measures to protect lives and property.
