Chelsea and Manchester City’s efforts to reach an agreement over the appointment of Enzo Maresca as Pep Guardiola’s successor have hit a major stumbling block, with a compensation dispute threatening to derail the move.
Guardiola announced on May 22 that he would step down as Manchester City manager after a trophy-laden decade at the club, prompting the Premier League champions to identify Maresca as their preferred candidate to usher in a new era at the Etihad Stadium.
However, negotiations between the two clubs have become increasingly complicated. Chelsea insist they are entitled to compensation for Maresca, who departed Stamford Bridge just months ago despite having a contract that runs until 2029.
The West London club reportedly believes Maresca’s contractual situation requires a financial settlement before any appointment can be finalized. Chelsea are also understood to be reviewing their legal options as discussions continue.
A source close to the club indicated that Chelsea’s position remains unchanged, emphasizing that compensation must be agreed upon before Manchester City can officially appoint the Italian coach.
City are eager to conclude negotiations swiftly as they prepare for life after Guardiola, but talks have slowed amid disagreements over the value of the compensation package and the structure of any potential deal.
Maresca is said to be open to a return to Manchester City, where he previously served as one of Guardiola’s assistants during the club’s historic Treble-winning 2022/23 campaign. The Italian also spent time within City’s coaching setup before establishing himself as a manager in his own right.
Before joining Chelsea, Maresca guided Leicester City back to the Premier League, enhancing his reputation as one of Europe’s most promising young coaches. He later enjoyed success at Stamford Bridge, leading the Blues to Club World Cup and UEFA Conference League glory.
While negotiations remain ongoing, the compensation issue has emerged as the key obstacle, leaving uncertainty over when—or if—Maresca’s return to Manchester City will be completed.
