A civil society organisation, the Centre for Reform and Public Advocacy (CFRPA), has formally asked the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to clarify issues surrounding the academic credentials submitted by President Bola Tinubu during the 2023 presidential election.
In a letter dated June 19, 2026, and addressed to the Chairman of INEC, Professor Joash Amupitan, the group urged the electoral body to publicly state its position on the matter ahead of the 2027 general election.
The letter, signed by the group’s Head of Legal Unit, Barrister Kalu Agu, was received at INEC’s headquarters in Abuja on the same day.
According to the organisation, the request is aimed at ensuring transparency in the electoral process and addressing lingering public debates over the academic records presented by the President during the 2023 election.
The group referenced documents obtained from Chicago State University during legal proceedings in the United States and argued that certain discrepancies require official clarification from the electoral commission.
Among its claims, CFRPA questioned information relating to President Tinubu’s educational history and alleged that some of the documents submitted to INEC should be subjected to further scrutiny.
The organisation also cited provisions of the 1999 Constitution relating to qualification and disqualification for elective office, arguing that INEC has a responsibility to provide legal clarity on issues affecting prospective candidates.
In the letter, the group urged the commission to make its position known publicly and warned that it could seek legal action if no response is provided.
According to CFRPA, such clarification would help prevent future disputes over candidate eligibility and strengthen public confidence in the electoral process.
The group further stated that it had written to other relevant government institutions regarding aspects of the allegations and was awaiting responses.
As of the time of filing this report, INEC had not issued an official response to the letter.
The allegations contained in the petition remain claims made by the civil society organisation and have not been determined by any court in relation to the 2027 election.
The development is expected to generate renewed political debate as preparations gradually begin ahead of the next presidential election cycle.
