Sanwo-Olu Endorses Deputy Governor Hamzat As APC Governorship Candidate For 2027 Lagos Election

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has announced Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat as the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate for the state ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Sanwo-Olu also unveiled Princess Damilola Sonayon-James as Hamzat’s running mate, describing the pair as a team capable of sustaining and expanding the developmental strides recorded in Lagos State.

The governor made the announcement in a post shared on his verified X account on Thursday.

According to him, the decision reflects the administration’s commitment to continuity, competence and inclusive governance.

He noted that effective leadership requires placing the future of the state in the hands of capable individuals with a clear vision and proven track records.

“Dr Obafemi Hamzat has proven himself to be a dedicated public servant, a dependable partner in governance and a steadfast advocate for progress,” Sanwo-Olu wrote.

The governor praised Hamzat for his contributions to the administration over the years, describing him as a reliable ally who has remained committed to the growth and development of Lagos.

Sanwo-Olu also commended Princess Damilola Sonayon-James, highlighting her expertise in sustainability and grassroots development.

He expressed confidence that her experience and passion for community engagement would complement Hamzat’s leadership style.

The endorsement comes as political activities ahead of the 2027 elections continue to gather momentum, with major parties gradually positioning potential candidates for key offices across the country.

If eventually ratified by the party through its internal processes, Hamzat’s emergence would place him in contention to succeed Sanwo-Olu as governor of Nigeria’s commercial capital.

However, the APC is yet to formally conduct its governorship primary election, and party stakeholders are expected to play key roles in determining the final ticket for the 2027 Lagos governorship race.

The development has already sparked reactions within political circles, with many observers viewing it as an early indication of the ruling party’s succession plans in Lagos State.
