United States President Donald Trump has strongly criticized the Senate following its approval of a war powers resolution aimed at limiting presidential authority to undertake military action against Iran without Congressional approval.
The resolution, which had previously struggled to gain traction in the Senate, reportedly secured passage after four Republican lawmakers broke ranks to vote alongside Democrats. One Democrat voted with Republicans, while two Republican senators were absent during the vote.
The measure seeks to reinforce Congress’ constitutional role in authorizing military action and states that the United States cannot engage in hostilities against Iran without prior approval from lawmakers.
The development comes at a time when Washington and Tehran are reportedly engaged in diplomatic discussions, with no immediate signs of military confrontation between the two countries.
Reacting to the Senate’s decision, Trump expressed frustration in a post on social media, arguing that the resolution could weaken America’s position in its dealings with Iran.
According to the US president, Iran is currently under significant pressure and has shown a willingness to make concessions during ongoing discussions.
“I have Iran on the ropes, ready to fall, willing to concede practically anything, and for the first time in decades showing great respect for the United States and its President, me, yet the US Senate opts for a poorly timed and insignificant War Powers Act vote,” Trump wrote.
He further claimed that the resolution sends the wrong signal to Iran, which he described as a major sponsor of terrorism.
Trump argued that the Senate’s action could be interpreted as a rejection of his approach toward Tehran and could undermine ongoing efforts by his administration.
The president also took aim at the Republican senators who voted in favour of the resolution, accusing them of making his task more difficult.
“These senators have just complicated my efforts, but I will accomplish my goals one way or another because I always achieve my objectives,” he added.
The vote marks a rare instance of bipartisan support for limiting presidential military powers regarding Iran and is expected to fuel further debate in Washington over the balance of authority between Congress and the White House on matters of war and foreign policy
