Minister of Works, David Umahi, has said that Nigeria’s security challenges did not originate under the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Speaking with journalists, Umahi urged Nigerians to avoid politicising insecurity, stressing that the responsibility of ensuring safety rests on both government and citizens.
The minister expressed concern over what he described as attempts by some political actors to use security issues as a tool for political attacks.
“It’s appalling when people talk about insecurity, especially extreme politicians, and insult President Tinubu,” Umahi said.
According to him, insecurity has been a long-standing national challenge that predates the current administration.
“Insecurity didn’t start with this administration. It is very unfortunate. Security is the job of everyone. Security should not be politicised,” he added.
Umahi also suggested that incidents of insecurity often appear to intensify as election periods draw closer, raising concerns about the timing of some security developments.
“Why is it that anytime we are approaching elections, there is heightened insecurity? It is very unfair,” he said.
The minister further condemned violence and the taking of innocent lives, emphasizing that those responsible for such acts would ultimately be accountable for their actions.
“Anyone who takes the life of another person under any guise, God is watching,” he stated.
His comments come amid growing public concern over kidnappings, terrorist attacks and other security challenges affecting several parts of the country.
Recent incidents involving the abduction of schoolchildren and teachers, attacks on communities and rising concerns about public safety have generated widespread debate among political leaders, civil society groups and citizens.
Umahi maintained that addressing insecurity requires collective responsibility, cooperation with security agencies and national unity rather than political division.
The minister called on Nigerians to support ongoing efforts aimed at restoring peace and stability across the country while avoiding actions or statements that could further inflame tensions.
