Arsenal have strengthened their goalkeeping department with the signing of French goalkeeper Illan Meslier on a two-year contract following the expiration of his spell at Leeds United.
The North London club confirmed the transfer on Thursday, welcoming the 26-year-old shot-stopper ahead of preparations for the new campaign. Meslier is expected to add experience and competition to Arsenal’s goalkeeping options as the team gears up for the season.
In an official statement, Arsenal highlighted Meslier’s impressive record during his seven-year stay at Leeds United, where he featured in 215 matches across all competitions and recorded 70 clean sheets.
Meslier began his football journey with French club FC Lorient, rising through the academy ranks before signing his first professional contract in February 2018. He made his senior debut later that year and marked the occasion with a clean sheet in a 1-0 Coupe de la Ligue victory over Valenciennes.
His performances in the 2018/19 campaign, during which he made 28 appearances in France’s Ligue 2, attracted interest from Leeds United. The English club secured his services on a season-long loan in August 2019.
The goalkeeper made his Leeds debut at Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium during an FA Cup third-round fixture in January 2020. After helping Leeds earn promotion to the Premier League, the move was made permanent.
During his time in the Premier League, Meslier made 107 appearances and established himself as one of the division’s experienced goalkeepers.
Arsenal said the France international’s arrival will provide additional quality and depth to the squad as the club prepares for another demanding campaign across domestic and European competitions.
The club also confirmed that Meslier will wear the No. 30 shirt and is expected to join his new teammates at the Sobha Realty Training Centre for pre-season activities, subject to the completion of the remaining regulatory formalities.
