France captain Kylian Mbappe etched his name into FIFA World Cup history on Saturday after becoming only the fourth player ever to score 10 or more goals at a single edition of the tournament.
The Real Madrid star achieved the remarkable feat during France’s dramatic 6-4 defeat to England in the third-place playoff.
Mbappe entered the match with eight goals and struck twice against the Three Lions to take his tally to 10 for the tournament.
According to OptaJoe, the 27-year-old is the first player in 56 years to reach double figures in goals at a single World Cup.
The last player to achieve the feat was Germany legend Gerd Müller, who scored 10 goals at the 1970 World Cup.
Mbappe now joins an elite list of players who have scored at least 10 goals in a single World Cup tournament:
Sándor Kocsis (Hungary) – 11 goals in 1954
Just Fontaine (France) – 13 goals in 1958
Gerd Müller (West Germany) – 10 goals in 1970
Kylian Mbappe (France) – 10 goals in 2026
Despite France missing out on a podium finish, Mbappe’s achievement further strengthens his reputation as one of the greatest World Cup performers of his generation.
