Ronald Koeman has announced his resignation as head coach of the following the team’s unexpected elimination from the FIFA World Cup.
The Dutch side crashed out of the tournament after losing a penalty shootout to in the Round of 32, bringing an end to a disappointing campaign.
Confirming his decision in a post shared on Instagram on Tuesday, Koeman said he had chosen to end his time in charge of the national team, admitting that the World Cup did not unfold as the players, coaching staff and supporters had hoped.
“We all dreamed of a World Cup where we would make history. That didn’t happen, and as head coach, I accept that responsibility,” he said.
The Netherlands entered the tournament with a strong World Cup pedigree, having progressed to at least the Round of 16 in each of their previous 11 World Cup appearances. They also reached the quarter-finals at the 2022 tournament in Qatar. The defeat to Morocco marked the third consecutive World Cup in which the Dutch were eliminated via a penalty shootout.
During the competition, Koeman came under criticism from some supporters and football analysts for adopting a cautious and defensive tactical approach. His contract was due to expire after the World Cup, but he decided against seeking an extension.
Reflecting on his departure, the former defender said leaving the role was a difficult decision because of the close relationships he had built with the coaching staff and players during his two spells in charge of the national team.
Koeman expressed gratitude to everyone associated with the Dutch national team, saying that despite the disappointing end to the World Cup, he would remember the teamwork and memorable experiences they shared.
He also revealed that he plans to spend more time with his wife, children and grandchildren, adding that stepping away from football management feels like the right decision at this stage.
This was Koeman’s second stint as Netherlands coach. He returned to the position after left the role following the 2022 FIFA World Cup, where the Dutch reached the quarter-finals before losing to eventual champions on penalties.
Despite the recent World Cup disappointment, Koeman guided the Netherlands to the semi-finals of , their best performance at a major international tournament since reaching the last four of the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
