Students of ICT Adegbenro Polytechnic, located along the Wasinmi–Itori axis in Ewekoro Local Government Area of Ogun State, on Tuesday staged a protest following the killing of a final-year student during an alleged armed robbery attack near the institution.
The protesters blocked the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway, causing a major traffic gridlock and leaving commuters and motorists stranded for several hours as they demanded improved security around the campus.
The students alleged that armed robbers frequently attack them while travelling to and from school, particularly in the Eruku area, and called on the Ogun State Government and security agencies to take urgent action.
According to the protesters, the overnight attack claimed the life of a Higher National Diploma (HND II) Marketing student, while several other students sustained injuries and are receiving treatment in hospital.
They lamented that repeated appeals for tighter security in the area had yielded little or no response.
In response to the incident, the institution announced the postponement of examinations scheduled for Tuesday, July 28, and Wednesday, July 29.
In a statement signed by the Chairman of the Timetable, Examination and Academic Calendar Committee, Gideon Adekunle, the school said the decision was taken to honour the deceased student and allow affected students time to recover emotionally.
“Following an unfortunate event that occurred over the night, which resulted in the loss of a student and another terribly injured in a robbery incident at Eruku, the exams scheduled for today Tuesday, July 28, and tomorrow Wednesday, July 29, are hereby postponed.
“This is to make sure students in the area affected are able to regain their composure and mental stability, and most importantly in honour of the deceased.
“Exams continue on Friday, July 30, 2026, as scheduled on the timetable. The new schedule for the postponed exams will be communicated in due course.”
Speaking on the incident, the institution’s Students’ Union Government (SUG) President, Comrade Owoigbe Blessing, said the attack occurred around midnight.
According to the SUG president, one final-year student was killed, while two other students sustained serious injuries.
“It happened in the midnight. One of the final-year HND II Marketing students was killed, another female student was injured, they cut her ear, and another guy who is at the Federal Medical Centre at the moment was shot.
“Please we need full support of the government. There’s no security. If there was security, this wouldn’t have happened to this extent. This is not the first, second or even the third time such is happening at Eruku,” the student leader said.
The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) in Ogun State also condemned the incident.
The state chairman, Comrade Olabode Faruq Success, called on Governor Dapo Abiodun to strengthen security across tertiary institutions and surrounding communities, insisting that students should not lose their lives while pursuing their education.
He urged the government to establish permanent security patrols involving the police and local vigilantes around campuses, noting that the attacked hostel is located close to the institution.
Reacting to the protest, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Ogun State Police Command, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, confirmed that officers had been deployed to the area.
He added that the demonstration remained peaceful and that police personnel were engaging with the protesting students.
