ASUU Declares Indefinite Strike at Plateau State University Over Unresolved Demands

Lecturers at Plateau State University, Bokkos, have commenced an indefinite strike following the failure of the university management to address demands presented by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU.

The Plateau State University chapter of ASUU, ASUU-PLASU, announced the industrial action on Wednesday after its Congress meeting.

The decision followed the expiration of a 14-day ultimatum issued to the university management on August 11.

In a statement signed by the union’s chairperson, Vincent D. Choji, and secretary, Lomka Kopdiya, ASUU said none of the six major issues it raised had been satisfactorily resolved.

Among the union’s demands is the implementation of the Contributory Pension Scheme and the full implementation of the 2025 agreement between the Federal Government and ASUU, including payment of outstanding arrears dating back to January 1, 2026.

The lecturers also demanded safe and secure accommodation for members of staff, the construction of trenches around the university’s perimeter fence and an end to what they described as intimidation of union leaders.

Another key demand is the payment of 22 months’ outstanding arrears of the 25/35 per cent wage award.

ASUU-PLASU said its Congress remained convinced that the university management had failed to adequately address any of the six issues.

“Congress is convinced that the substance of our demands on all six items has not been satisfactorily addressed,” the union stated.

The chapter said the decision to embark on the indefinite strike received approval from ASUU’s National Executive Council.

It subsequently directed all members to suspend academic activities with immediate effect until further notice.

The development is expected to disrupt academic activities at the university as the union awaits further action from the institution’s management
