The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has authorised its branches in 20 universities across Nigeria to issue 14-day ultimatums to their respective authorities over the alleged non-implementation of the 2025 agreement between the union and the Federal Government.
The decision was reached during ASUU’s National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held at the University of Abuja on Saturday and Sunday, August 8 and 9, 2026.
According to resolutions signed by ASUU President, Christopher Piwuna, the union expressed concern over what it described as the inconsistent implementation of the 2025 Federal Government-ASUU agreement across universities.
ASUU also accused the Federal Government of failing to release the subvention required for the full implementation of the agreement.
The union further criticised authorities and visitors of several state-owned universities that have yet to implement the agreement for their academic staff.
Following deliberations at the NEC meeting, ASUU authorised branches that had sought approval to begin the process leading to industrial action.
Each affected branch is required to issue a 14-day ultimatum to its university authorities before commencing a strike.
The 20 affected institutions are Nasarawa State University, Keffi; Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai; University of Medical Sciences, Ondo; Gombe State University; Plateau State University, Bokkos; Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba; Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma; Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology, Okitipupa; Abia State University, Uturu; and University of Education and Entrepreneurship, Akamkpa.
Others are Emmanuel Alayande University of Education, Oyo; Kaduna State University; Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology, Wudil; Northwest University Kano; Enugu State University of Science and Technology; Imo State University, Owerri; Niger Delta University; University of Africa, Toru-Orua; Bayelsa Medical University; and Taraba State University, Jalingo.
ASUU directed the affected branches to proceed with industrial action if their demands remain unresolved after the expiration of their respective 14-day ultimatums.
The development raises the prospect of disruptions to academic activities across the affected universities if their authorities fail to reach agreements with the union within the stipulated period.
The latest directive comes amid growing pressure from ASUU branches over implementation of the 2025 agreement.
On Monday, August 10, the union’s Imo State University branch declared a total and indefinite strike, citing the non-implementation of the agreement alongside other outstanding welfare issues.
ASUU maintained that the latest action is aimed at compelling the relevant authorities to fulfil agreements concerning the welfare and conditions of service of academic staff in public universities.
