Boko Haram: Abubakar Shekau’s Son Reportedly Follows Father’s Path

Ibn Mohammed bin Shakau, identified as the biological son of late Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau, has reportedly emerged within the ranks of the insurgent group in Nigeria’s North-East.

Counter-terrorism expert Zagazola Makama disclosed the development in a post on X, raising concerns about the possible continuation of networks and ideology associated with the former Boko Haram leader.

According to Makama, Ibn Mohammed is reportedly following the path of his father, who led Boko Haram through one of the deadliest periods of the insurgency in Nigeria and the wider Lake Chad region.

Details surrounding Ibn Mohammed’s reported activities, position within the group or level of influence were not provided.

There was also no official confirmation from the Nigerian military or other security agencies in the information available at the time of filing this report.

Abubakar Shekau rose to prominence as Boko Haram’s leader following the death of the group’s founder, Mohammed Yusuf, in 2009.

Under Shekau’s leadership, the terrorist organisation carried out numerous attacks targeting communities, security personnel, government institutions and civilians, particularly across Nigeria’s North-East.

The insurgency subsequently expanded beyond Nigeria, affecting communities in neighbouring countries around the Lake Chad Basin.

Shekau also became notorious for appearing in propaganda videos in which he issued threats, claimed responsibility for attacks and communicated the group’s positions.

His leadership was characterised by extreme violence and eventually contributed to divisions within the insurgency, particularly following the emergence of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) as a rival faction.

Shekau died in 2021 following a confrontation with ISWAP fighters in the Sambisa Forest, significantly changing the balance of power among insurgent factions operating in the region.

“His death in 2021, following a confrontation with fighters of the Islamic State West Africa Province, ISWAP, significantly altered the dynamics of the insurgency in the Lake Chad region,” Makama stated.

The reported emergence of Shekau’s son comes as Nigerian security forces continue counter-terrorism operations against Boko Haram and ISWAP across Borno State and other parts of the North-East.
