Unidentified gunmen have killed Ishaq Yunusa, the All Progressives Congress (APC) Chairman in Dekina Local Government Area of Kogi State, during an attack along the Itobe-Ochadamu Expressway.
The incident occurred around 5pm on Thursday near Ojuwo Olijo in Ofu Local Government Area, according to the Kogi State Police Command.
The police said armed men emerged from the surrounding bush and opened fire on motorists travelling along the highway.
In a statement, the state Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Saliu Afusat, said a blue Toyota Corolla was later discovered abandoned along the road.
The driver, identified as Ishaq Yunusa, was found dead inside the vehicle.
The police said another person who was travelling in the vehicle was abducted and taken into the surrounding bush by the attackers.
Following the incident, security operatives were deployed to the area and began combing the surrounding forest in an effort to rescue the abducted victim and apprehend the attackers.
The body of Yunusa was evacuated to Grimard Hospital in Anyigba, where it is expected to undergo an autopsy.
The police said the Commissioner of Police, Naziru Kankarofi, had ordered sustained security operations along the affected corridor following the attack.

The command also urged motorists and residents living around the route to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious movements to security agencies.

The latest attack adds to growing security concerns along major highways in Kogi State, where travellers have faced incidents of kidnapping and armed attacks.
Police said investigations are ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding the killing and identify those responsible, while the search for the abducted victim continues.
