The Oyo State Government has declared Thursday, August 20, 2026, a work-free day to commemorate Isese Day and celebrate the cultural and traditional heritage of the Yoruba people.
The declaration was contained in a memo signed by the Secretary to the Oyo State Government, Prof. Musibau Babatunde, and made available to journalists in Ibadan on Wednesday through a statement by the Governor’s Special Adviser on Media, Dr Sulaimon Olanrewaju.
Governor Seyi Makinde congratulated adherents of African Traditional Religion across Oyo State, Nigeria and beyond, wishing them a successful and spiritually enriching celebration.
According to the state government, the work-free day will allow workers and residents to participate fully in the celebration and pray for peace, unity and stability in Oyo State and Nigeria.
The governor also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to fairness and inclusiveness across all religions, while appreciating traditional worshippers for their support for his government over the years.
The state government said the Isese Day celebration forms part of Makinde’s efforts to recognise traditional religion and promote Yoruba cultural heritage.
Makinde had previously identified cultural tourism as an important area of economic potential for Oyo State, with the Isese celebration serving as part of efforts to promote the state’s indigenous traditions and cultural identity.
The declaration means government offices and other affected public institutions in Oyo State will observe Thursday, August 20, as a work-free day as residents participate in this year’s Isese Day activities.
