A Nigerian student has appealed to the public for justice after alleging that her girlfriend was forced to end their relationship and marry a man reportedly chosen for her by her father.
In a video shared online, the student claimed that her girlfriend was kept in her family home for eight days before her father allegedly arranged for her to marry his friend’s son.
The student questioned the practice of parents deciding who their children should marry, arguing that while parents have a responsibility to guide their children, they should not force them into marriages against their wishes.
According to her, entering a marriage without genuine consent could leave the person emotionally distressed and create difficulties within the union.
“Parents have the right to guide their children, but they should not force them into marriages against their wishes.”
The student also appealed to Nigerians to speak up over what she described as an alleged forced marriage, insisting that her girlfriend should have been given the freedom to decide who she wanted to spend her life with.
She further alleged that her girlfriend’s father wanted her to marry his friend’s son, despite her existing relationship and apparent unwillingness to enter the proposed marriage.
The claims made in the video have generated discussion online, particularly around parental control, consent and forced marriage.
However, the allegations remain those of the student who shared the video, and the father and other parties involved have not publicly responded to the claims in the report.
