David Ibiyeomie Tells Christians to Preach Hope, Not Hell, Amid Nigeria’s Economic Hardship
Founder of Salvation Ministries, David Ibiyeomie, has urged Christians to focus on God’s love and compassion when sharing the gospel, arguing that messages centred on hell are unlikely to resonate with many Nigerians battling severe economic hardship.
Speaking during a recent sermon, the Port Harcourt-based cleric said the country’s harsh economic realities have left millions struggling with the rising cost of living, making hope a more powerful tool for evangelism than fear.
According to Ibiyeomie, people facing daily hardship need encouragement and the assurance that their lives can improve through faith in God.
“You can imagine preaching hell to Nigerians. They’re already in hell. There’s no way you preach hell to Nigerians, and anybody will be born again. Just tell them God loves you. He can change your story. Come to Jesus.”
He added that warning people about eternal punishment may not connect with those already overwhelmed by present-day suffering.
“If you tell someone, ‘You will go to hell,’ the person will ask, ‘The suffering I’m facing now, what is it?’ That kind of message can’t win souls.”
The pastor encouraged believers to demonstrate the same compassion they preach by showing kindness, extending mercy and supporting people regardless of their circumstances.
His remarks come as many Nigerians continue to grapple with inflation, rising food prices, high transportation costs and broader economic pressures affecting households across the country.
The comments have sparked debate online. While many agreed that messages of hope are more effective during difficult times, others argued that Christian evangelism should continue to balance God’s love with teachings on repentance and the consequences of sin.
Ibiyeomie’s message has reignited conversations about the most effective approach to evangelism in a period when many Nigerians are searching for hope amid economic uncertainty.
