Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has directed security agencies to identify and arrest those responsible for vandalising parts of the Festac-Alakija Bridge.
The governor condemned the incident as criminal, barbaric and unacceptable, warning that the state government would not tolerate the destruction of critical public infrastructure.
Sanwo-Olu said officials from the Lagos State Office of Infrastructure had inspected the bridge following reports of the vandalism and established that its structural integrity remained intact.
According to him, the government will immediately carry out remedial work to protect the affected sections of the bridge.
“I have been informed by officials of the Office of Infrastructure who visited the bridge that the structural integrity of the bridge is intact, and remedial work will be executed immediately to protect the columns.”
The governor also warned that those responsible for the vandalism would be prosecuted once apprehended.
“Anyone who is found to be culpable in this horrendous, shameful and condemnable incident will surely face the law.”
Sanwo-Olu urged Lagos residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities around bridges and other government facilities to the appropriate authorities.
He stressed that Lagos “has no place for such barbarism and acts of violence against our critical infrastructure and other facilities.”
A video circulating on social media showed that some metal rods around sections of the Festac-Alakija Bridge had allegedly been removed, triggering concerns among residents over the safety of the infrastructure.
However, the state government’s preliminary inspection indicated that the bridge remained structurally intact despite the vandalism.
The incident has generated condemnation on social media, with residents calling for tighter security around public infrastructure and the prosecution of those involved.
The state government said remedial work would be carried out immediately to protect the affected columns and prevent further damage.
