A woman has sparked debate online after explaining why she believes her husband should take full financial responsibility for their family.
In a viral video, the woman said she does not believe her husband should expect her to contribute financially towards household expenses, including their children’s school fees.
According to her, money earned by the wife should remain hers, while the husband’s income should be used to provide for the entire family.
“My husband cannot say I should come and pay school fees with him. It’s not done. My money is my money. His money is for all of us,” she said.
She also based her position on her understanding of Islamic teachings, arguing that providing for the family is the responsibility of the husband.
“He has to provide everything and this is according to Islam. That is what Islam says,” she added.
The woman further compared marriage responsibilities with the standard of living a woman experienced while growing up.
She said her parents provided her with food and accommodation and argued that her husband should be able to provide a similar level of care after marriage.
“My parents catered for me. They fed me, they housed me. So you should be able to give me same,” she said.
She also advised people to consider their social and economic backgrounds when choosing marriage partners.
According to her, people from significantly different backgrounds may struggle to adjust to each other’s expectations after marriage.
“In fact, Islamically, you are supposed to marry. You are encouraged to marry within the same status,” she said.
She illustrated her argument by comparing a woman raised in an affluent environment with domestic workers and other household support to someone who grew up in a less privileged setting.
“You can’t pick a child from Banana Island and take her to Mile 2. How will she survive?” she asked.
She argued that a woman who grew up with maids and chefs may find it difficult to suddenly take on household responsibilities she was not accustomed to.
“You can’t pick a child that has grown maids and chefs and everybody around. So asking her to come and do her laundry by herself or ask her to come and start washing your clothes because you are the man. No,” she said.
Her comments have generated debate online, with Nigerians sharing different views on financial responsibilities, household duties, religious expectations and the roles of husbands and wives in marriage.
😳 Unbelievable video showing a lady saying: “My husband cannot say I should come and pay school fees with him. It’s not done. My money is my money, while his money is for all of us.”
She says this is what Islam teaches. Abeg, is this actually true?👀 pic.twitter.com/Q8x5LZf90q
