Ex-Reps Member Urges EFCC to Reopen Atiku’s Alleged Financial Crimes Case

A former member of the House of Representatives, Ehiozuwa Agbonayinma, has asked the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, to reopen and prosecute an alleged financial crimes case involving former Vice President and African Democratic Congress, ADC, presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar.

Agbonayinma made the demand through his lawyer, Hannibal Uwaifo of Sagitarian Law Firm, in a letter addressed to the anti-graft agency.

According to TheCable, the letter, dated August 27, 2026, was received by the EFCC on September 1.

The former lawmaker reportedly gave the commission 14 days to take action on the request.

Uwaifo said the demand was based on an earlier investigation conducted by the EFCC and a report concerning allegations against Atiku during his tenure as Nigeria’s Vice President.

Atiku served as Vice President between 1999 and 2007 under former President Olusegun Obasanjo.

Agbonayinma is asking the EFCC to revisit the allegations and take appropriate legal action if the commission’s investigation establishes that offences were committed.

The latest demand comes as Atiku prepares for the 2027 presidential election under the ADC platform, amid increasing political activity ahead of the poll.

The allegations referenced in the request remain allegations and have not been established as criminal wrongdoing against Atiku by a court.
