Flood Disaster: Two Teenagers Drown in Kaduna as Bodies Remain Missing

Two teenagers have drowned following heavy rainfall and flooding in Askplaye community, Kaduna State.

The victims were identified as Suleiman Yakubu, 19, and Abubakar Mohammed, 17. Their bodies had not been recovered as of the time of the report.

The incident occurred after torrential rainfall triggered flooding in parts of Kaduna State.

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), North-West Operations Office, Kaduna, confirmed the deaths while providing an update on the flood situation across affected communities.

NEMA said its North-West Operations Office, working alongside the Kaduna State Emergency Management Agency (KADSEMA) and other relevant stakeholders, had continued to assess communities affected by the prolonged rainfall.

According to the agency, the rainfall lasted for approximately four consecutive days, from Thursday to Monday, affecting several parts of Kaduna metropolis.

The assessment team, led by NEMA’s Head of Operations, Hajia Halima Suleiman, visited affected communities to determine the extent of the flooding and its impact on residents.

NEMA reported that some communities experienced flash floods, with floodwaters submerging roads and temporarily leaving some residents trapped inside their homes.

The flooding also disrupted transportation and movement within the affected areas, forcing residents to exercise caution while navigating the impacted communities.

During the assessment, Suleiman visited the family of the late Yakubu to express condolences over the loss and provide support to the bereaved relatives.

NEMA said it would continue working with KADSEMA and other emergency response agencies to monitor the flood situation and evaluate the needs of affected communities.

The agencies are expected to use the assessment to coordinate an appropriate emergency response as efforts continue to monitor the impact of the heavy rainfall across Kaduna State.
