A Nigerian lady has advised people in relationships to be careful about taking relationship advice from social media, arguing that genuine love should be demonstrated through consistent effort, care and consideration.
In a video circulating online, she said there was nothing wrong with a woman cooking for her partner, cleaning his home, arranging his belongings or helping with laundry when she visits, particularly when the man is also making an effort to treat her well.
According to her, relationships should not be governed by rigid social media rules about what men or women are expected to do for their partners.
She also argued that a man who genuinely loves his partner would be willing to spend money on her, while stressing that both partners should contribute effort to making the relationship work.
“See eh, don’t let social media deceive you. If you have a man that is trying his best in treating you nice, there’s nothing bad in you cooking for him when you visit. There’s nothing bad in you sweeping his house, arranging his house and helping him with the laundry.”
Addressing men, she said genuine affection should also be reflected in how they treat and support the women they love.
“And to the men, if you really love a woman you will definitely spend. Oh yes, there’s no two way about this.”
She criticised the growing trend of social media users creating strict rules about what people should or should not do in relationships.
According to her, people should pay more attention to the quality of their individual relationships rather than blindly following advice that may not apply to their circumstances.
“This whole social media thing where everybody is trying to give an advice that you should not do this and this as a man or don’t do this as a woman, see eh, if you really love someone you are going to put in the work and effort.”
The lady also spoke to women who are uncertain about whether their partners genuinely love them.
She said genuine feelings would usually become evident through a person’s consistent actions, particularly their communication and willingness to maintain the relationship.
“And if you’re a girl and you’re confused if the guy you’re currently dating or in a situationship with really loves you, there will be signs.”
She identified communication as one of the first signs to consider, arguing that a person should not have to repeatedly beg their partner for basic communication.
“First is how they communicate with you. Yes, you cannot be begging for communication…”
Her comments have sparked discussions online about the role of social media advice in modern relationships, with conversations often centred on financial expectations, household responsibilities, communication and the effort partners should make for each other.
The video has continued to circulate as social media users share different views on whether acts of service and financial support should be considered natural expressions of love or expectations that should be discussed between partners.
