Olori Atuwatse III, the wife of the Olu of Warri, Ogiame Atuwatse III, has revealed that her husband remains firmly opposed to polygamy, joking that her presence alone is enough for the monarch.
The queen made the remarks during an interview with the BBC, where she discussed her marriage, fashion choices and responsibilities as the wife of the Olu of Warri.
According to Olori Atuwatse III, the monarch has previously made his position on having multiple wives clear and does not appear interested in changing his stance.
She said jokingly that she could comfortably fulfil the role of several women in her husband’s life.
“His Majesty is not going to change his mind about polygamy. Maybe just settle down for a day. Me alone, one me, I’d be like three women. So, I’d do alright for him,” she said.
The queen also discussed her approach to fashion and explained why she frequently covers her hair while performing her official duties.
Olori Atuwatse III said the decision is not the result of any restriction on her personal style. Rather, she explained that it reflects her respect for the traditional institution and the responsibilities attached to her position as queen.
She noted that her crown and the clothing associated with her official appearances influence her decision to cover her hair whenever she is in what she described as “queen mode.”
Beyond her own fashion choices, the queen also disclosed that she contributes to her husband’s appearance and fashion decisions.
With a touch of humour, she described herself as the monarch’s stylist, saying, “I be my husband stylist.”
