The Cross River State Police Command has arrested a 24-year-old graduating student of the University of Cross River State (UNICROSS), Emmanuel Ejim Ejim, over a viral video showing a man allegedly firing a pistol from the window of a moving vehicle in Calabar.
The incident occurred during a sign-out event by graduating students of the university, with the vehicle reportedly rented by Ejim and other members of his group for the celebration.
According to the police, shots were allegedly fired sporadically within parts of Calabar metropolis as the group travelled towards the university campus.
The incident prompted the Commissioner of Police, Ajo Geoffrey Ordue, to order the immediate identification and arrest of those involved after the video circulated online.
The Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations, alongside operatives of the Violence Crime Response Unit (VCRU), subsequently launched an intelligence-led operation to identify the vehicle captured in the footage.
Police said the driver of the vehicle was first arrested, while information obtained during the investigation helped operatives trace another suspect to a hotel in Calabar.
The suspect was identified as Emmanuel Ejim Ejim, a 24-year-old student of UNICROSS.
In a statement signed by the command’s spokesperson, ASP Eitokpah Sunday Akata, the police said preliminary investigations indicated that Ejim allegedly identified himself as a leader of the Vikings Confraternity and allegedly admitted being the person seen firing the shots in the viral video.
“The suspect, a student of the University of Cross River State (UNICROSS), allegedly identified himself during questioning as a leader of the Vikings Confraternity and allegedly admitted to being the person seen firing the shots in the viral video.”
The police said Ejim told investigators that he participated in the sign-out activity on the day of the incident and that another suspected member of the group allegedly handed him the pistol seen in the video.
The command said efforts were ongoing to identify and arrest other people connected with the incident.
Police also said the circumstances surrounding the possession of the firearm and the movement of the vehicle remain under investigation.
The Commissioner of Police directed investigators to conduct a professional and comprehensive investigation into the incident.
The arrest comes amid renewed concerns over the use of firearms and alleged cult-related activities during student celebrations and sign-out events.
