President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has said Nigerians who criticise or verbally attack him can do so without fear of being harassed or facing reprisals from his administration.
Tinubu made the statement on Thursday in Abuja during the centenary celebration of the Daily Times of Nigeria Limited, where he was represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume.
The President said his administration’s willingness to tolerate criticism was part of its commitment to press freedom and a key element of the Renewed Hope Agenda.
“Let us admit that under this government, you can insult and attack the President and still go to bed without midnight troubles. This philosophy lies at the heart of the Renewed Hope Agenda,” Tinubu said.
He said the government recognised the role of the media and the need for Nigerians to be able to express their views, including criticism of those in power.
Tinubu added that national renewal required Nigerians and their leaders to confront the country’s challenges honestly while making difficult decisions needed to move the nation forward.
“The task of national renewal requires the courage to understand where we have come from and confront what we have laid back and made difficult, necessary choices, but where we must go,” he said.
The President’s remarks come amid ongoing public debate over the performance of his administration, particularly on issues including the economy, rising living costs, security and governance.
By emphasising that Nigerians can criticise him without facing reprisals, Tinubu said his administration would continue to uphold the principles of press freedom and allow room for public scrutiny.
The statement also comes as Nigeria’s political space becomes increasingly active ahead of the 2027 general elections, with political parties, civil society groups and members of the public intensifying discussions around the performance of the current administration and the country’s political future.
