AKSU SUG President Etimbuk Daniel Reportedly Dies at NYSC Camp in Enugu

The immediate past Students’ Union Government (SUG) president of Akwa Ibom State University, Comrade Etimbuk Daniel, has reportedly died at the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) orientation camp in Enugu State, following allegations of delayed medical attention and the administration of suspected counterfeit medication.

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) announced his death in a statement by its president, Comrade Akinteye Babatunde Afeez, on Sunday, October 11, expressing grief over the loss and calling for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

According to the account provided by NANS, Daniel complained of a severe headache less than a week after arriving at the orientation camp and was given medication.

His condition reportedly deteriorated after taking the drugs. He subsequently informed those around him that he was feeling worse and requested to be taken to a hospital for further medical attention.

However, the approval required for him to leave the camp was allegedly delayed. NANS said Daniel died before he could be taken to a hospital.

The student association also raised concerns about the medication he received, alleging that a doctor later identified the drugs as fake. The claim has not been independently verified, and the precise medical cause of Daniel’s death has not been established in the reports reviewed.

NANS described the circumstances surrounding the death as deeply troubling and called for an investigation to establish what happened, including the nature of the medication administered and the reported delay in arranging further treatment.

The association also highlighted concerns about the dangers posed by counterfeit medicines and the need for accountability where failures in medical care are established.

Daniel’s death has prompted mourning among members of the Akwa Ibom State University community, fellow students and former colleagues who knew him during his tenure as SUG president.

As of the latest reports reviewed, a detailed public response from the NYSC authorities addressing the allegations had not been identified.

A transparent investigation would help establish the circumstances of Daniel’s final hours and determine whether any lapses occurred in the medical care provided to him.

May his soul rest in peace.
