Edo Varsity Lecturer Dies in Ekpoma Hotel, Police Arrest Three Over Death

A senior lecturer with Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, Edo State, Dr Matthew Uwuigbe, has died at a hotel in Ekpoma, with the state police command confirming the arrest of three people in connection with the incident.

The incident reportedly occurred on Sunday, October 5, 2026, at a hotel in the Mosco area of Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area of the state.

According to the police, Uwuigbe had checked into the hotel with a 21-year-old woman identified as Angela Defa Jacob.

The woman reportedly left the room after Uwuigbe asked her to get him water. When she returned, she allegedly found the lecturer lying unresponsive in the room.

The development was confirmed on Tuesday by the Edo State Police Command spokesperson, Eno Ikoedem, who said the command received a report concerning the lecturer’s death.

“On October 5, 2026, at about 8 pm, the command received a report that Matthew Uwuigbe, a lecturer at Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, had lodged at a hotel in Ekpoma and engaged the services of a 21-year-old sex worker, Angela Defa Jacob,” Ikoedem said.

She added that the woman had been sent to purchase water and found Uwuigbe dead when she returned.

The police spokesperson said the hotel owner, manager and the woman are currently in custody as investigators work to establish the circumstances surrounding the lecturer’s death.

Uwuigbe’s remains have reportedly been deposited at the Oriaifo Memorial Hospital mortuary pending further investigation.

Meanwhile, the university confirmed that Uwuigbe was a member of its academic staff but said the incident did not occur on the institution’s premises.

The university’s Public Relations Officer, Otunba Mike Ade Aladenika, said the circumstances surrounding the lecturer’s private activities should not be attributed to the university.

“We are not denying that he is our staff, but whatever he did and what happened, it is his private life. The girl in question is not our student, and everything happened outside our institution,” Aladenika said.

The police have not announced the cause of death, and the circumstances surrounding Uwuigbe’s death remain under investigation.
