Billionaire Elon Musk has announced plans to give one SpaceX share to every child in the United States in 2027, a proposal that could be worth more than $10 billion based on the company’s recent share price.
Musk disclosed the plan on Monday, October 19, in a post on his social media platform, X.
“Next year, I will give one of my SpaceX shares to every kid in America,” he wrote, adding, “This will be the first of many.”
The announcement has drawn attention because of the potential scale of the proposed giveaway. According to figures from the US Census Bureau cited by news reports, more than 72 million people under the age of 18 live in the country.
At SpaceX’s reported closing price of $146.03 per share on Friday, October 16, distributing one share to each of those children would represent an estimated market value of more than $10.5 billion. <Cite refs={[“turn917326search1″,”turn917326search4”]}/>
However, Musk has not explained how the shares would be distributed, what age or residency requirements would apply, or how the programme would be administered. His post also did not specify when in 2027 the proposed transfers would begin.
The announcement followed a move by artificial intelligence company Anthropic, which said on Sunday that it would commit 5 per cent of its shares to a new entity known as the Anthropic Public Benefit Fund, subject to stockholder approval.
Anthropic said the fund would support public-benefit initiatives, with possible uses including donations to non-profit organisations and direct assistance to specific groups. The company also said additional shares could be allocated as its value increases. <Cite refs={[“turn917326search0″,”turn917326news38”]}/>
Musk responded to Anthropic’s announcement by arguing that shares should be distributed directly to the public rather than placed in a managed fund. His proposed giveaway to American children followed that exchange.
SpaceX, the aerospace and artificial intelligence company founded by Musk, has expanded its activities across space transportation, satellite communications and AI-related technology.
Although Musk’s announcement signals an intention to make a substantial transfer of wealth, it remains a proposal without publicly disclosed implementation details. The estimated $10.5 billion value is based on a recent share price and the estimated number of children in the United States, rather than a confirmed final cost.
