A Nigerian woman identified on TikTok as Kemisola2.3.1 has sparked a conversation about gossip, backbiting and the emotional harm they can cause within church communities, calling on church leaders and members to confront behaviours that undermine trust and fellowship.
In a message directed at church leaders, women and men, Kemisola raised concerns about how rumours and negative talk can leave people struggling with fear, trauma, anxiety and sleepless nights.
Her concerns echo experiences shared by several social media users in the comments, including people who said they had been embarrassed, falsely accused or pushed away from church communities because of rumours.
One commenter, who identified herself as a pastor’s child, described growing up with fear and emotional trauma and said an allegation about her relationship with a male church member had affected her ability to associate with people and express herself freely.
Another commenter recounted an experience in which a pastor allegedly accused her publicly of misconduct and suspended her from church duties before later admitting that he had made a mistake. She said she eventually left the church despite attempts to persuade her to return.

How can church leaders effectively stop gossip and backbiting without discouraging members from reporting genuine misconduct or abuse?
