Nigerians can now find the digital postcodes assigned to their homes, offices and other buildings through the Federal Government’s National Digital Alphanumeric Postcode System, operated by the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST).
The platform was launched nationwide on October 1, 2026, to make it easier to identify individual buildings using a unique 11-character alphanumeric postcode linked to their geographic location.
Unlike conventional postcodes, which often identify a wider postal area, the new system is designed to provide a more precise digital reference for a specific building. It can help residents, businesses, delivery companies and public agencies identify locations without relying entirely on landmarks or lengthy directions.
The official platform allows users to search for buildings using an address, place name, postcode or registered alias. Users can also locate a building on a map and retrieve its code.
Here is how to find your digital postcode and check the address information associated with your building.
1. Visit the official NIPOST postcode website
Open the official website at postcode.gov.ng and select “Find my postcode” to begin searching for a location.
NIPOST also provides a mobile application for Android and iOS users through the official platform. The website currently lists the app for download on Google Play and provides information about iOS availability.
2. Search for your home address
If you know your house number, street name, neighbourhood or another address detail, enter it into the platform’s search field.
You can also search by a familiar place name, postcode or alias where one is available.
Select the result that matches your intended address and inspect the map. Check nearby roads, neighbouring buildings and recognisable landmarks to make sure the selected location is correct.
NIPOST advises users to verify the exact building because neighbouring properties can have different digital postcodes.
3. Check whether your name appears in the address information
Some properties may be identified through informal descriptions or aliases associated with their owners or occupants. This can be useful in communities where buildings are better known by a person’s name than by a formal street address.
According to a report by TheCable, NIPOST Postmaster-General Tola Odeyemi said officials collected both standard and informal building addresses during field data gathering.
To check the information associated with your property, search for your address or a name commonly used to identify the building, then inspect the result.
However, the postcode belongs to the building, not the homeowner or occupant. A failed search for your personal name does not necessarily mean your property is missing from the system.
4. Use your phone’s location to find your building
If you are at or near your home, you can use the platform’s location feature to identify your building.
Open the NIPOST Postcode application, select “Find My Postcode” and allow location access when prompted. The application will display a map of your current area.
Identify your building on the map and select it to retrieve the corresponding postcode.
Do not automatically select the nearest building marker. Compare the map with your surroundings to ensure you have chosen the correct property.
5. Request a postcode if your building is missing
If you cannot find your building after searching carefully, it may not yet have been captured or assigned a postcode.
NIPOST allows users to request a postcode through its official platform. The process may require the building’s address, location information and other relevant details. A Google Maps link can also help identify the property.
The request is reviewed before a postcode is assigned. Users should not create or guess a code themselves.
6. Correct inaccurate address information
If the platform displays incorrect information about a building, use the available suggestion or correction feature to report the error.
Provide the correct details and identify the information that needs to be changed. NIPOST says proposed changes are subject to review before the records are updated.
What is the digital postcode used for?
The National Digital Alphanumeric Postcode System is intended to make addresses easier to identify and share. Its potential uses include deliveries, logistics, business records, emergency response and public service delivery.
Once you find your postcode, you can save it for future use or share it with delivery riders, visitors, businesses and other people who need to locate the building. The postcode can also be used alongside a conventional written address.
Finding, saving and sharing a digital postcode is free for individual users, according to the official platform.
Nigerians can access the service through the official NIPOST Digital Postcode website. Before using or sharing a code, confirm that the selected building on the map matches the intended address.
