The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has announced plans to establish a Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) centre in Ottawa, Canada, beginning from 2027.
The Board disclosed the plan on its official social media platforms following a visit by its Registrar, Professor Segun Aina, to the Nigerian High Commission in Ottawa.
According to JAMB, the proposed centre will enable eligible Nigerians living in Canada and other parts of North America to sit for the UTME without travelling to Nigeria specifically to take the examination.
“The proposed centre will make it easier for Nigerians in the diaspora to sit for the UTME without travelling to Nigeria solely for the examination,” the Board said.
JAMB said the initiative was part of its efforts to expand the reach of Nigerian tertiary education and strengthen the connection between Nigerians living abroad and the country’s education system.
The Board also said the establishment of the centre would create opportunities to showcase Nigerian tertiary education internationally.
The proposed Ottawa centre is expected to make it more convenient for eligible Nigerians in Canada and surrounding parts of North America to participate in the Nigerian university admission process.
“For Nigerians in Canada, the UTME is coming closer to home,” JAMB said.
The Board did not provide further details on the exact location of the proposed centre, registration arrangements or the number of candidates expected to use the facility when the announcement was made.
