Boxing legend Mike Tyson wants former unified heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua to face ex-WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder after Joshua’s highly anticipated showdown with Tyson Fury in December.
Tyson made his position known during an appearance on DJ Whoo Kid’s show, where he discussed the upcoming all-British heavyweight clash between Fury and Joshua.
The fight is scheduled for December 11 at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff, Wales, with the event set to stream globally on Netflix. The main event is expected to take place in the early hours of December 12 local time, subject to the necessary arrangements for the late-night start.
While backing Fury to win the encounter, Tyson expressed particular interest in seeing Joshua test himself against Wilder, whose punching power has made him one of the most feared heavyweights of his generation.
“Tyson’s always been known to handle pressure well, but it’s going to be interesting to watch this fight. I know Joshua’s going to be throwing faster punches, but his punches can’t be faster than Deontay Wilder’s,” Tyson said.
He added: “I wanna see him (Joshua) fight Deontay.”
The proposed Joshua-Wilder contest would bring together two former heavyweight champions whose long-discussed meeting has yet to take place. Both fighters have built reputations around their knockout ability, although their careers have followed different paths in recent years.
Joshua, 36, has a professional record of 30 wins and four defeats, according to the figures cited in the report. He returned to action in July with a second-round knockout victory over Kristian Prenga in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
Wilder, a former WBC champion, is also known for his devastating right hand, a weapon that could make a potential meeting with Joshua an attractive contest for boxing fans.
Fury, meanwhile, enters the December showdown with a reported record of 36 wins, two losses and one draw. The 37-year-old has recorded victories over Arslanbek Makhmudov and Mariusz Wach this year, strengthening anticipation ahead of his first professional bout against Joshua.
The Fury-Joshua fight was announced by Saudi boxing adviser Turki Alalshikh in September and is expected to determine the holder of the WBA heavyweight super title, according to reports surrounding the event. The proposed late start has also required consideration of changes to the stadium’s operating arrangements.
For now, Tyson’s comments add to the discussion about Joshua’s future opponents, with the former heavyweight champion making clear that a showdown with Wilder is a fight he would like to see after the December contest.
