Military Retirees Block Pensions Board Office in Abuja Over Disputed Pension Increase

Retired military personnel on Tuesday, October 13, barricaded the entrance to the Military Pensions Board office in Dutse Alhaji, Abuja, to protest against the formula used to calculate their pension increases.

The protesters placed canopies and chairs in front of the entrance and occupied the area, preventing access to the premises as they demanded a fair review of their pension adjustments.

Armed soldiers were stationed at the gate to prevent the retirees from entering the office.

The demonstration comes weeks after the veterans protested at the Ministry of Defence in September, calling for an increase in their pensions following salary adjustments for serving military personnel.

During the earlier agitation, the Minister of Defence, Christopher Musa, reportedly assured the retired personnel that their pensions would be increased in October.

However, the retirees have expressed dissatisfaction with the calculation method adopted by the Military Pensions Board, alleging that the adjustment has not adequately reflected the salary increases granted to serving members of the Armed Forces.

The veterans argued that the formula used to determine their revised pensions has left some retirees disadvantaged, despite the earlier assurances that their payments would be reviewed.

They are now demanding a fairer calculation method that takes the salary adjustments for serving military personnel into account.

The dispute highlights continuing concerns among retired military personnel over pension payments and the implementation of adjustments following salary increases for active-duty officers.

The retirees are insisting that the Military Pensions Board address their concerns and ensure that the pension review delivers a fair outcome for eligible beneficiaries.
