Nine people have been killed in a road crash involving a Delta Line commercial bus and a gas truck along the Ijebu-Ode–Ore section of the Ijebu-Ode–Benin Expressway in Ogun State.
The crash occurred on Monday at about 4:55 p.m. around the Bethel area of the highway. The victims were travelling from Asaba, Delta State, towards Lagos when the accident occurred.
According to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Ogun State Command, the vehicles involved were a white Toyota Hiace commercial bus operated by Delta Line, with registration number 14B-299DT, and a white Sino Truck belonging to Bill Gas Solution Ltd, with registration number AAB162XD.
The FRSC said all nine occupants involved in the crash, comprising three males and six females, died at the scene.
The accident occurred during rainfall, leaving the road surface wet. Preliminary findings by the FRSC identified speed violation as the probable cause of the crash.
Rescue officials from the FRSC arrived at the scene at about 4:58 p.m., two minutes after receiving the report of the accident.
The bodies of the victims were evacuated to the General Hospital Morgue in Ijebu-Ode, while the two vehicles were towed to Ilese Police Station by officers of the Police Motor Traffic Division.
Ogun State Sector Commander of the FRSC, Corps Commander Oludare Ogunjobi, urged motorists, particularly commercial vehicle operators, to exercise greater caution while driving during rainfall.
He advised drivers to obey prescribed speed limits and maintain adequate following distances to reduce the risk of crashes.
The FRSC commiserated with the families of those who lost their lives in the accident.
