A nurse identified as Taiwo Godwin Ayodeji has died following an asthma attack at the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Aro, in Abeokuta, Ogun State, amid allegations by an eyewitness that oxygen was not properly administered during efforts to save his life.
According to a report by SaharaReporters, Ayodeji, who reportedly had a history of asthma, was rushed to the hospital after experiencing breathing difficulties while playing football.
An eyewitness told the publication that a friend who accompanied the nurse said he was still able to walk into the hospital’s emergency unit upon arrival to seek medical attention.
However, the source alleged that although Ayodeji was placed on oxygen equipment, the oxygen supply was not switched on despite his worsening condition.
“I noticed he was on oxygen, but the oxygen was not put on,” the eyewitness was quoted as saying.
The source further alleged that Ayodeji’s condition deteriorated before the medical team could effectively attend to him. According to the account, he developed a weak pulse and dilated pupils during the emergency.
The eyewitness also claimed that a doctor encountered difficulties while attempting to access his vein and that efforts to secure his airway were unsuccessful. A doctor subsequently pronounced him dead, according to the report.
The circumstances surrounding the nurse’s death have raised concerns, with the eyewitness alleging that Ayodeji’s death was the second involving a nurse from the same school at the hospital in 2026.
The source called for a thorough investigation into the incident and urged the relevant authorities to ensure that the circumstances surrounding Ayodeji’s death are established.
As of the time of the report, the school authorities had not publicly responded to the development.
The allegations concerning the administration of oxygen and the medical response have not been independently verified. An investigation would be necessary to establish the circumstances of the nurse’s death and determine whether any lapses occurred in the emergency care provided.
