A member of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), identified as Kamoru Omokoye, has been shot dead by suspected cultists at Abijo Bus Stop in the Ibeju-Lekki area of Lagos State.
Omokoye was reportedly attacked around 9am on Sunday by two men who arrived at the bus stop in an unregistered Lexus RX 350.
A police source in the community said the assailants shot Omokoye in the head before speeding away from the scene.
The victim was rushed to the Federal Medical Centre, Epe, where a doctor reportedly pronounced him dead.
“The incident occurred around 9am on Sunday. Two men suspected to be cultists arrived at Abijo Bus Stop in an unregistered Lexus RX 350 and shot the deceased victim, who was a member of the NURTW. The attackers immediately sped off from the scene,” the police source said.
The source added that detectives visited the scene after receiving information about the attack and combed the surrounding area for possible suspects.
An anti-cultism advocacy platform, Naija Confra, also reported that Omokoye, popularly known as Zobo, was sitting at a spot where local gin, popularly known as ogogoro, was being sold when the attackers arrived.
The platform claimed that about three other people sustained gunshot injuries during the attack.
“Zobo was reportedly sitting at a drinking (Ogogoro) spot with others at the bus stop when the attackers arrived and opened fire. Some people ran away, while at least three people sustained gunshot wounds. Zobo was killed in the attack.”
Naija Confra also claimed that Omokoye had previously worked at Awoyaya Bus Stop before moving to GRA Bus Stop, and that he had an eight-month-old child.
The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Adebisi, confirmed the incident and said an investigation had commenced.
“The police have commenced investigation into the incident,” she said.
The circumstances surrounding the shooting and the identities of the attackers remain under investigation.
The incident comes weeks after another violent attack was reported in the same community. In September, a mechanic identified simply as Samson was reportedly killed after allegedly being lured to a location under the pretext of repairing a Mercedes-Benz.
He was reportedly taken into a bush after arriving at the location and subsequently hacked to death.
Police authorities have not disclosed whether any arrests have been made in connection with either incident.
