The incident occurred on Sunday, October 18, in the Igbo-Edu area of the state, according to the police.
The command’s spokesperson, DSP Babaseyi Oluseyi, confirmed the incident to journalists, saying it was reported at the Abigi Divisional Police Headquarters.
A video circulating on social media reportedly shows the husband in a boat with his wife’s remains wrapped in a mat. However, the circumstances surrounding the fire and the events leading to the woman’s death have not been fully established.
Oluseyi said the deceased’s body had been deposited at a mortuary for a post-mortem examination to help determine the circumstances of her death.
He added that the case was being processed for transfer to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Eleweran, Abeokuta, for further investigation.
The Commissioner of Police in Ogun State, CP Bode Ojajuni, assured the public that the case would be investigated diligently and professionally in accordance with the law.
The police have not disclosed further details about the cause of the fire or whether investigators suspect foul play. The arrest is part of the ongoing investigation, and no conclusion about responsibility should be drawn before the facts are established.
