Petrol prices have increased at several filling stations in Abuja and its environs, with Dangote Refinery-backed MRS outlets raising their pump price to N1,409 per litre despite the Federal Government’s proposed plan to reduce the cost of petrol at Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) stations.
A market survey conducted on Monday morning showed that MRS filling stations increased their petrol price from N1,370 to N1,409 per litre, representing a rise of N39 per litre over the weekend.
The new price has been implemented at several MRS outlets across the Federal Capital Territory, including stations in Kubwa, Katampe and Gwarimpa.
Similarly, Ranoil and AA Rano have increased their petrol prices by N10 per litre, moving from N1,400 to N1,410 per litre across their outlets.
The latest adjustments come amid discussions about a proposed petrol price reduction by the Federal Government.
Minister of Finance, Taiwo Oyedele, had proposed reducing the price of petrol to N1,350 per litre at NNPCL filling stations as part of an initiative aimed at easing the burden of fuel costs on Nigerians.
However, the latest price increases at MRS, Ranoil and AA Rano outlets highlight the differences in pump prices among fuel retailers.
Fuel marketers have called on the Federal Government to extend the proposed price reduction initiative to other filling stations instead of limiting its implementation to NNPCL outlets.
They argued that extending the initiative across the retail market would allow more motorists and other petrol consumers to benefit from the proposed reduction.
With petrol prices remaining a major concern for households and businesses, further developments regarding the government’s proposal are expected to influence fuel pricing across the country.
