The Kano State Police Command has invited Aminu Abdullahi Warkal, a candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) for the state House of Assembly, for questioning over the alleged unlawful display of a firearm during a political gathering.
The Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, disclosed this in a statement issued on Monday, October 5, 2026.
According to the police, Warkal was seen in a viral social media video allegedly displaying a firearm suspected to be a pump-action rifle during what appeared to be a political gathering.
The command said the video was discovered during its routine cyber patrol as part of its intelligence-led surveillance and security operations across the state.
“One Hon. Aminu Abdullahi Warkal was seen openly displaying a firearm suspected to be a Pump Action Rifle during what appears to be a political gathering,” the statement said.
The police said the alleged display, if established, could violate provisions of the Firearms Act and potentially cause fear, intimidation and a breach of public peace.
Following the directive of the Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, Warkal was invited to the command headquarters in Bompai, Kano.
The police said the politician was at the State Intelligence Department (SID) as of the time of the statement, while investigation into the matter was ongoing.
The command warned that it would not tolerate acts of lawlessness, thuggery or the display of weapons capable of threatening public safety, regardless of the status of the person involved.
The Commissioner of Police also urged political actors, their supporters and other stakeholders to conduct themselves peacefully and comply with the Electoral Act, Firearms Act and other applicable laws.
The command said all political activities in the state should promote peace, tolerance and respect for the rule of law.
It added that it remained committed to protecting lives and property and maintaining peace in Kano before, during and after the political season.

The allegation against Warkal remains subject to investigation, and the police have not said whether he has been charged with any offence.
