Oyo State Governor and Allied Peoples Movement (APM) presidential aspirant, Seyi Makinde, has met with the European Union Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Gautier Mignot, and ambassadors representing 16 EU member states in Abuja.
Makinde disclosed the meeting in a statement on Thursday, saying the discussions focused on Nigeria-EU development cooperation, current affairs and the future of Nigeria.
The governor said the meeting provided an opportunity to discuss ongoing international development initiatives involving the European Union and Nigeria, alongside broader issues concerning the country.
“This morning, we met with the European Union Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, His Excellency @GautierMignot2 as well as Ambassadors from 16 member states in Abuja.
“Our discussions centred on ongoing international development cooperation initiatives between the @EUinNigeria and Nigeria, current affairs and the future of Nigeria.”
The meeting comes against the backdrop of continued cooperation between Nigeria and the European Union across areas including economic development, trade and investment, governance, security, climate action, digital transformation and migration. The EU has described Nigeria as a key strategic partner and has continued to expand cooperation through initiatives including its Global Gateway investment framework.
Mignot has served as the EU Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS since 2024, according to the EU Delegation.
The engagement also follows previous discussions between Makinde and Mignot on strengthening cooperation, including agricultural development, education, climate change and efforts to address gender-based violence in Oyo State.
Makinde, who is seeking the presidency on the APM platform, has increasingly undertaken engagements beyond Oyo State as part of his political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections.
No specific agreements or new initiatives arising from Thursday’s meeting were announced in Makinde’s statement.
