Nollywood actor Emeka Ike has taken legal action against the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and Lere Olayinka, media aide to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, over the alleged unauthorized release of his voter registration information.
In the suit filed at the court, the actor is seeking ₦10 billion in damages, claiming that his privacy rights were breached after details of his voter registration transfer surfaced on social media platform X (formerly Twitter).
The controversy began when screenshots allegedly containing Emeka Ike’s voter registration data were shared publicly online, sparking concerns over data protection and the handling of sensitive electoral information.
INEC had earlier responded to the incident, stating that the exposure was not caused by an external cyberattack. According to the commission, the leak resulted from the misuse of internal access credentials, raising questions about internal data security protocols.
Emeka Ike is asking the court to hold both INEC and Lere Olayinka responsible for the alleged breach. He is also requesting a court order directing the removal of the viral post from all platforms where it was shared.
In addition, the actor is seeking a public apology from Olayinka, insisting that the publication of his personal voter details without consent caused reputational harm and violated his right to privacy.
The case adds to growing concerns about data protection in Nigeria, particularly regarding the handling of citizens’ personal information by public institutions and individuals with access to sensitive records.
Neither INEC nor Lere Olayinka has issued further public comments regarding the lawsuit as of the time of filing this report.
