The Federal Government has called on media organisations across Nigeria to avoid giving excessive attention to terrorists, bandits and other criminal groups, warning that prominent coverage of their activities could strengthen their influence and frustrate efforts to improve national security.
Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, made the appeal during a two-day National Security Summit held in Abuja on Thursday, June 18. The event was organised by the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in partnership with the Department of State Services (DSS).
Addressing journalists and media stakeholders, Idris said the responsibility of the press goes beyond reporting events, stressing that editorial decisions should also take into account the country’s overall interest and security.
According to the minister, journalists should exercise discretion in deciding what deserves prominence, noting that criminal groups often seek publicity to spread fear and gain attention.
He urged editors and reporters to stop placing stories about terrorists and other violent groups on front pages, saying such exposure effectively gives them free publicity. Idris added that while criminal activities are newsworthy, media outlets should avoid allowing them to dominate headlines at the expense of stories highlighting the efforts of security agencies.
The minister expressed concern that achievements recorded by the military and other security institutions are sometimes overlooked, while attacks and threats by criminal elements receive widespread coverage.
He also stressed that peace and stability are necessary for the growth of the media industry and the country as a whole. According to him, journalists, media owners and citizens share a collective responsibility to protect Nigeria’s unity and survival.
Idris further called on the media to give greater recognition to members of the armed forces and other security personnel who continue to risk their lives in the fight against terrorism, banditry and other forms of insecurity.
The National Security Summit brought together media practitioners, security officials and stakeholders to discuss the role of responsible journalism in addressing security challenges and promoting national development.
