Rodri Fined £80,000 by FA Over Referee Comments After Man City vs Tottenham Match

Manchester City midfielder Rodri has been fined £80,000 by The Football Association over comments he made about referee Robert Jones after a Premier League draw against Tottenham Hotspur.

The incident happened after the 2-2 match played on February 1, where Rodri suggested the referee was not neutral during the game.

FA Says Comments Questioned Referee’s Integrity

According to the FA, the Spain international admitted to acting improperly during a post match interview.

The football body said his remarks implied bias and could damage the reputation of match officials, leading to disciplinary action.

A regulatory commission later ruled that Rodri should pay an £80,000 fine.

Controversy Over Tottenham Goal

Rodri’s reaction followed Tottenham’s second goal scored by Dominic Solanke, which stood despite protests from Manchester City players.

The midfielder believed the goal should have been disallowed, claiming there was a foul on defender Marc Guehi during the build up.

After the match, Rodri said the referee should remain neutral and suggested decisions went against his team.

Rodri Later Apologises

During the disciplinary process, Rodri sent letters to the FA explaining that his comments were made out of frustration.

He later admitted the wording was wrong and said he did not intend to accuse the referee of bias.

“I did not intend to question the integrity of the match officials. I have great respect for referees and the difficult job they do,” he said.

The FA accepted the apology but still imposed the fine, saying players must avoid comments that could damage confidence in officiating.
