Nigerian Army Warns Soldiers Against Social Media Use, Threatens Sanctions

The Nigerian Army has warned its personnel against the misuse of social media, stating that soldiers who violate regulations on online conduct will face disciplinary action.

The warning was issued by the Army Provost Marshal, Mathias Erebulu, during a training seminar for Military Police personnel.

According to him, commanders across various formations have been directed to intensify awareness campaigns on the consequences of social media abuse among troops.

Erebulu stressed that soldiers are expected to comply strictly with existing military regulations governing online activities.

He stated that personnel found violating the military’s social media rules would be punished accordingly.

The senior officer also tasked commanders with ensuring that officers and soldiers under their supervision are properly briefed on acceptable conduct online.

In addition, Erebulu reminded personnel about constitutional provisions regarding civilians detained by the military.

He said civilians arrested by military personnel must be handed over to the appropriate law enforcement agencies within 24 hours after preliminary investigations.

According to him, military facilities are not meant for prolonged civilian detention.

The seminar focused on strengthening discipline and operational standards among Military Police personnel.

The event was featured on African Independent Television’s morning programme, Kakaaki.

The development comes amid increasing public conversations around military conduct, online communication, and the relationship between security agencies and digital platforms in Nigeria.
