The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has dismissed claims that Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara enjoys widespread public support ahead of the 2027 elections.
Wike made the remarks during his monthly media briefing in Abuja on Wednesday.
Speaking on the political crisis in Rivers State, the former governor recalled the intervention of President Bola Tinubu during the impeachment proceedings initiated against Fubara.
According to Wike, the President urged all parties involved to embrace peace, leading to the withdrawal of the impeachment move by the Rivers State House of Assembly.
He explained that agreements were reached during the reconciliation process but alleged that the governor later failed to fully comply with the terms agreed upon.
Wike compared the situation to an arbitration process, stressing that all parties were expected to respect and honour the outcome.
Reacting to claims that people are urging Fubara to seek re-election in 2027, Wike described such narratives as misleading.
He argued that politicians often make such claims for political advantage and questioned the idea of unanimous public support.
The minister maintained that the lawmakers involved had already fulfilled their part of the peace agreement out of respect for the President’s intervention.
The comments add another layer to the ongoing political tension in Rivers State, where divisions within the political structure have continued to generate national attention.
