The Federal Government has received the first batch of repatriated Nigerians evacuated from South Africa, with an Air Peace flight conveying the returnees safely to Lagos on Thursday morning.
The evacuation flight landed at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, at approximately 10:35 a.m., bringing home Nigerian citizens, including women and children.
Senior government officials were on hand to welcome the returnees upon arrival and reassure them of the government’s commitment to their welfare and reintegration.
Among those present to receive the evacuees were the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, the Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), and the Commissioner for Migrants and Refugees.
The officials assured the returning Nigerians that immediate support would be provided to ease their transition back into the country.
They also pledged comprehensive long-term reintegration assistance aimed at helping the returnees rebuild their lives and access necessary social support services.
According to the Federal Government, the repatriation exercise is not a one-off intervention, as additional evacuation operations have already been scheduled for the coming weeks.
Authorities confirmed that further Air Peace evacuation flights from South Africa are expected to arrive on the following dates:
- June 15, 2026
- June 18, 2026
- June 22, 2026
- June 24, 2026
The government said the staggered schedule is designed to ensure that all affected Nigerians who wish to return home are evacuated in an organised and efficient manner.
While details surrounding the circumstances that led to the repatriation were not immediately disclosed, officials emphasised that the safety and well-being of Nigerian citizens abroad remain a priority.
The latest exercise highlights the ongoing role of the Federal Government and relevant agencies in responding to the needs of Nigerians in the diaspora during emergencies and humanitarian situations.
The returnees are expected to undergo documentation and receive further assistance as part of efforts to support their reintegration into society.
