Gunmen Abduct Ondo Monarch, Shoot Wife During Late-Night Attack On Community

Gunmen suspected to be kidnappers have abducted the traditional ruler of Ode Oriya in Owo Local Government Area of Ondo State, Oba Adeniyi Adelana, after attacking his residence on Saturday night.

The 60-year-old monarch was reportedly taken away by the armed assailants, who invaded the community at about 8:30 p.m.

According to sources within the community, the attackers, said to be about six in number, stormed the monarch’s residence heavily armed before carrying out the operation.

During the attack, the gunmen allegedly shot the monarch’s wife before whisking Oba Adelana away into the nearby forest.

The condition of the monarch’s wife initially sparked concern among residents, who feared the attack could have resulted in more casualties.

Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the Ondo State Police Command, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, said the injured woman is currently receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital.

He disclosed that security operatives were immediately deployed to the area following reports of the abduction.

According to the police, tactical teams have launched an extensive search operation aimed at rescuing the traditional ruler and apprehending those behind the attack.

“A comprehensive search-and-rescue operation was immediately activated, with security operatives combing nearby forests, bush paths and suspected escape routes in a determined effort to track the movement of the kidnappers, secure the victim’s safe release and bring the perpetrators to justice,” Jimoh said.

He assured residents that the police command remains committed to ensuring the monarch is reunited safely with his family.

“The Command remains resolute in its commitment to ensuring that the victim is reunited safely with his family while all those involved face the full weight of the law,” he added.

The police spokesperson also appealed to members of the public to remain calm and avoid panic as security operations continue.

“The Ondo State Police Command urges members of the public to remain calm and continue their lawful activities without fear. Residents are encouraged to cooperate with security agencies by providing credible and timely information that may aid ongoing operations,” he said.

The abduction of the traditional ruler has heightened concerns over insecurity in parts of Ondo State, where communities have continued to grapple with incidents of kidnapping and violent attacks.

As of the time of filing this report, the whereabouts of Oba Adeniyi Adelana remain unknown, while security agencies intensify efforts to secure his release and track down the perpetrators.
